Workshop: Web Searching and ‘Net Safety Resources August 28, 2008
Posted by roberta in : General , trackbackHere are some resources mentioned in my workshop on effective web searching and internet safety. First, general searching tips:
- Google search help
- Google advanced search
- More Google search features
- Google scholar
- Printable search tip posters for the classroom from Google
- Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine
Other search engines:
- Choosing the best search engine for your needs
- Hakia - a good place to start, as general queries yield a nice gallery of results sorted by type
- Cuil- a nice search interface, which looks like it will encourage exploration
And searching wikipedia:
- Similpedia- cut and paste a paragraph and find relevant wikipedia articles
- Powerset- search highlights different wikipedia articles and you can expand them to see if they’re what you need right in the search engine
Finally, Internet safety resources. This is a volatile issue and there’s a lot of rhetoric out there. I’m just going to point you to a few reasoned resources which are great for parents and students as well.
- Connecting Safely- I consider this the premiere web safety resource, as it is up to date and promotes conversation over a list of dos and don’ts. Send students or parents here if they have questions.
- Web Aware Canada- The Safety tips by age (in left side navigation) are well thought out and explain what kids that age are likely to be doing and how to stay safe. Again, great for families as well as teachers, and is a Canadian site.
- Internet 101- Good general information, Canadian.
