Social bookmarking is simply storing bookmarks online and making them available for others to view. There’s a lot more to it than that though- if you’re in SD92, come on out to the clinic, and if you’re not, the links below will get you started on your exploration.
Cool words I learned while researching Social Bookmarking:
- Ontology: the study of entities and their relations.
- Metadata: Data about data. Metadata helps users find relevant information.
- Folksonomy: User created metadata in the form of tags.
- Tags: A tag is a (relevant) keyword or term associated with or assigned to a piece of information.
Social Bookmarking sites of note:
- Connotea: Online reference management
- Del.icio.us: Online bookmark management that allows tagging and sharing of links. Best overall for simplicity and useability.
- Diigo: Takes it one step further with social bookmarking and annotation, allows the user to save ‘clips’ from pages and add notes. Requires a browser plug-in.
