On-line Connectivism Conference, day 1 February 2, 2007
Posted by roberta in : learn, OCC2007 , add a commentToday’s presentor was George Siemens, who spoke on Connectivism in general. Here are some key thoughts:
- Change from knowledge as a product to knowledge as a process.
- Emphasis is on how to find the answer as opposed to memorizing facts
- The abundance of information creates problems.
- Human capacity is limited, technology can serve as extended memory, but nothing more, we need new procedures to cope with this abundance. A network can help to filter.
- Connectivism is a network leaning model- the network holds and filters knowledge.
- An individual’s ability to learn and stay current is related to the strength and diversity of their network.
- On many levels, basic cognition is handled by technology (examples include tags to help find relevant images on flickr, or links on del.icio.us. RSS feeds bring relevant information to the learner…), allowing us to move on to sensemaking sooner.
The idea of co-constructing knowledge through your network rings true to me from my experiences blogging- conversations are wider and yet focused, as those who join in are legitimately interested and informed.
